Caleb Wong 黃立恆, Viola 中提琴

Caleb’s introduction to classical music began on the violin at the age of five, with his abecedarians’ influences and the need of a violist in his quartets, Caleb decided to choose the viola as his major instrument at the age of 17 and established himself as a finalist of the Washington International Competitions and the Generation Next Arts Competition.  

Since then Caleb has made himself an active chamber musician in the United States, Europe and Asia. He was the violist of the Artist in Residence Chamber Ensemble at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010 in his piano quintet. He then played in the Alpensia Quartet sponsored by Artsylvia Foundation in South Korea. Caleb joined the Cong Quartet in 2015 and took part in the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute in New York, the Intensive String Quartet seminar at Music Academy Hörpu in Iceland and have worked closely with the Pacifica Quartet, Dover Quartet, Shanghai Quartet, members of the American, Tokyo, Juilliard and Borodin String Quartet among others. Recently Caleb has won the Grand Prize in the 2019 Salzburg=Mozart International Chamber Competition in Tokyo with his Quartet.

As an orchestral musician, Caleb was previously a member of The Orchestra Now (TŌN) in New York, Evansville Philharmonic at Indiana, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra in Kentucky, and played with the New York Philharmonic. During his time in New York, Caleb performed regularly in world famous venues like the MET museum, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and recorded with labels such as Naxos and Sorel Classics.

Back at his time in Hong Kong, Caleb was a winner of the violin concerto competition in the School Music Festival and was later graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then went to the US and obtained his Masters of Music in Viola Performance and Performer Diploma in Orchestral Studies at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a full scholarship, before further studies in New York. Caleb has studied with many of the world greatest violists, his most important teachers were Kaori Wilson, Kazuhide Isomura and Edward Gazouleas, other influential mentors include Ivan Chan, Stephen Wyrczynski and Mara Gearman.


During his time at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he was a principal viola of the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra and Summer Philharmonic. He was also very passionate in teaching, he took violin pedagogy as his minor study during his masters program and engaged a teaching role in the String Academy as well as the Fairview Violin Project where he worked closely with pedagogues Mimi Zweig and Brenda Brenner. Caleb has coached a number of young quartets at different occasions including Madeline Island Chamber Music and the Indiana University Summer String Academy.

自五歲開始學習小提琴,在啟蒙老師和四重奏的影響下,立恆在十七歲時選擇了中提琴為主修樂器。自此之後,立恆曾在華盛頓國際弦樂比賽和新世代藝術比賽等大賽中躋身決賽,並積極參與世畀各地的室樂演奏。先在2010年擔任香港中文大學駐校室樂組藝術家,又獲南韓Artsylvia基金贊助成為駐大山嶺音樂節(現已改名為平昌音樂節)四重奏的中提琴手。自2015年加入Cong四重奏,立恆出席了紐約羅伯特曼恩四重奏研討會、冰島哈帕國際音樂節的四重奏研討會等國際室樂節,曾受不同世級界四重奏指導,當中包括上海四重奏、鮑羅丁四重奏、卡雲尼四重奏、茱莉亞四重奏和東京四重奏的成員,並在2019年東京薩爾斯堡莫扎特室樂國際比賽中奪得冠軍。

立恆同時為活躍的樂團樂手,曾是紐約樂團The Orchestra Now (TŌN)、美國伊凡斯維爾交響樂團和肯德基歐文斯伯勒交響樂團的樂手,亦參與紐約愛樂團等多個不同樂團演出。在紐約期間,立恆定期在大都會藝術博物館、卡奈基音樂廳和林肯中心等世界標誌性場地演出,並為拿索斯和Sorel Classics等唱片公司錄音。立恆多年來曾與多位指揮大師合作,包括著名女指揮家馬林·阿爾索普、曾任克利夫蘭、巴黎等樂團總監的克里斯托夫·馮·多赫南伊、前紐約愛樂樂團首席指揮阿倫·基爾伯特、倫敦交響樂團和慕尼黑愛樂樂團等的首席指揮格吉耶夫、蘇黎世歌劇院和紐約大都會歌劇院首席指揮法比奧.雷西、維也納國立歌劇院已故指揮大師馬捷爾、現任波士頓交響樂團首席指揮尼爾森等等。

 

黃氏在港時是學校音樂節小提琴協奏曲組的冠軍,並在香港中文大學音樂系畢業。赴美後在印第安納大學積可斯音樂學院先後獲得中提琴演奏碩士和樂團演奏文憑,期間獲頒全費獎學金。及後亦在紐約巴德學院和茱莉亞音樂學院的四重奏研集班深造。立恆曾隨多位著名中提琴老師學習, 當中最重要幾位為香港管弦樂團助理首席中提琴熊谷佳織、東京四重奏的磯村和英先生和印第安納大學時期的嘉素利亞斯教授,其他影響甚深的老師包括陳浩堂、前費城管弦樂團首席Stephen Wyrczynski和西雅圖交響樂團的瑪奈.姬曼。

 

在印第安納大學就讀期間,立恆是交響樂團和暑期管弦樂團的中提琴首席。他在修讀碩士時副修小提琴教學法,曾隨 Mimi Zweig (Joshua Bell之啟蒙老師)及美國弦樂教師協會主席布倫達·布里納博士兩位知名小提琴教學家學習和共事,在為幫助問題兒童的Fairview小提琴計劃中擔任小提琴老師和在印第安納大學弦樂學院任室樂導師,亦曾在大學的暑期弦樂學院和阿波斯特爾群島室樂節指導年輕的四重奏。
